Northern Colorado baseball just missed out on a win against Kansas
Lawrence, Kan. – For the third straight game, Northern Colorado baseball was involved in a one-run outing, this time coming up just short against Kansas on Tuesday afternoon 2-1. The loss closes out UNC's five straight games to open the season with the Bears going 1-4 during that stretch.
How It Happened
The cooler weather and wind made it a pitcher's duel on Tuesday. The Bears saw their first three batters reach base, with Cole Maltese bringing home Tyler Yamaguchi for UNC's lone run of the game. Kansas proceeded to tie the game up in the bottom half of the inning.
Both teams were held scoreless until the sixth inning when Kansas pushed across the game-winning run. The Jayhawks leadoff hitter, Owen Tayler walked and then a bunt single and sacrifice bunt put him on third base. Marcus Wheeler drove home Tayler on a ground out to third base.
Players of the Game
UNC: Cole Maltese continued his good start to the year, going 1-for-4 on the day and driving home UNC's lone run. The RBI today increased his season total to three through five games.
KU: Michael Tinsley went 3-for-3 for the Jayhawks and drove in the team's first run of the game. He was also hit by a pitch to have a perfect on-base percentage in the game.
Stats of the Game
It was definitely a pitcher's duel on Tuesday with both teams combining for just 10 hits and three runs
Northern Colorado used almost all of its pitchers in the game sending eight different guys to the mound.
UNC used a pair of double plays, along with some timely pitches to get out of jams, forcing Kansas to strand 12 runners.
Coach Iwasaki's Take
"In the big picture I am happy with our first 45 innings of the 2016 season. We showed a lot, taking one comeback win from a Missouri Valley Conference power program in Wichita State and playing a Big 12 program to a one run differential in two games. We gave ourselves a chance to take two games at Kansas. I believe the players are headed in the right direction in the preseason and we are looking forward to heading to California next weekend to compete with CSNU for four games."
What's Next?
The Bears will get the next couple of days off, before continuing its long road trip to open the year at Cal State Northridge. UNC and CSUN start a four game series on Friday night including a double-header on Saturday.
