@NCBearsBaseball Drop Season Opener at Wichita State
2/19/2016 5:41:00 PM | Baseball
Northern Colorado baseball dropped its season opener 11-0 at Wichita State
How It Happened
WSU had three big innings that did the Bears in on the day. The first of the three was in the first inning when Wichita State used a 3-run home run to jump out to the early lead. In the fifth, the Shockers added on four more runs on just one hit to extend their lead to 7-0. During their last at-bat, WSU added three more insurance runs to get to the 11 runs scored in the game.
Players of the Game
UNC: Ryan Yamane returned to the diamond for the first time in almost a year after sitting out most of last season, performing well for UNC. He finished the game going 1-for-3, with a double and walk in the loss. Yamane's double was the Bears first hit of the season.
WSU: Gunnar Troutwine was a big part of Wichita State's offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate, with the two hits being a home run and double. He scored twice, while driving in three runs and drawing a walk.
Stats of the Game
- Wichita State's pitchers held UNC to just two hits in the game.
- The Bears pitchers struggled at times with command, walking 11 Shockers in the game, while giving up only eight hits.
- UNC's pitchers combined to strike out nine WSU hitters in the game.
- Northern Colorado was able to strand 11 Wichita State runners.
Coach Iwasaki's Thoughts
"I felt we were prepared today to compete with WSU. The boys had effort and energy. The story of game one was we got down early with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the first and they added a big inning in the bottom of the fifth. The bright spot was Connor Leedholm settling down in the 2nd-4th innings keeping us in the game through 4. We will need him this year to compete in the march through the conference season."
What's Next?
The Bears and Shockers will go right back at it tomorrow afternoon for game two of the three-game series. UNC will send senior Spencer Applebach onto the hill while WSU will start Willie Schwanke. First pitch between the two is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. mountain time.
