@UNCBearsSoccer rolls to undefeated weekend

Greeley, Colo – In a battle of the Northern's, it was Northern Colorado who walked away victorious over Northern Arizona, 3-0. The Bears, who are now 6-0-0 at home this season were aided by Kassy Castillo's first goal of the season and Madeline Burdick's fifth shutout en route to their victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lumberjacks came out fast and furious, throwing shot after shot, toward Burdick and the Bears' defense.
For another consecutive game, the Bears were outshout, today 21-10. However, the Bears' back four, led by Madeline Chase, Paige Morris, Makayla McBride, and Taylor Kochevar, prevented NAU from garnering quality looks. In fact, only a mere 7 of their 21 were on target.
Twenty five minutes into the contest, the Bears' offense pushed forward. Brooke Braden made a turn towards goal, found the right foot of Kassy Castillo and Castillo blasted a shot from the top of the 18, bouncing it off the post and into the goal.
Momentum in hand, Northern Colorado looked to continue its offensive attack and another goal to cushion the lead.
In the 38th minute, sophomore midfielder Mariel Gutierrez dilingently made her way into the penalty area, and NAU committed soccer's eighth deadly sin to give Gutierrez a penalty shot. Gutierrez buried the ball into the right corner of the net, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead for the second time in as many games.
Bear fans' nerves were tested early in the second half, as Northern Colorado gave two penalty kicks to the Lumberjacks with five minutes.
The 2015 Big Sky Tournament MVP, thanks to her three penalty kick saves, would be up to the task, though, saving each one and keeping her clean sheet alive.
Sydney Schroeder entered the goal scoring bananza for the Bears in the 68th minute, on yet another cross from Maddie Roberts, who now boasts five assists on the season.
Unlike Friday night, the Bears didn't relinquish a late goal to the opponent, despite allowing nine corner kicks on the afternoon.
Northern Colorado inevitably improved to 3-2 in Big Sky, launching themselves into a tie for third in the conference.
KEY STAT
Saves – Madeline Burdick finished with seven saves, compared to Meghan Dickmann's two.
MOST VALUABLE BEAR
Madeline Burdick – Seven saves, including two penalty kick saves.
IN THEIR WORDS
Kassy Castillo, Junior Midfielder
"I saw Brooke (Braden) body up a girl, got the pass, and I was fortunate enough to send it in. Honestly, because of how I was turned on the field, I didn't even get to see it go in."
"The defensive midfielder role has a lot of pressure assigned to it. I never want to allow easy balls that our back four have to deal with. For me, if I can control the one's in the air, then it's easier for the team to make the next play."
Madeline Burdick, Junior Goalkeeper
"I go into those penalty shots with confidence. I go in thinking that the kicker has to try to avoid me. I saw both of them looking right early, so I had a pretty good gut feeling on where the ball was going to go."
Tim Barrera, Head Coach
"Overall, we are very pleased with the weekend. Today was kind of an up and down day for us. Scoring two goals in the first half was huge. Coming out in the second and giving up two penalty kicks is not what you'd like to see, but luckily we have someone like Burdick who can step up big when needed."
"We're in a good position now in the conference, but you have to take it game by game. There are no easy wins in this league. We'll focus on Portland State and Sacramento State, who are both good teams, coming up next weekend."
NOTABLES
-Freshmen Kenzie Engelkins played meaningful minutes against the Lumberjacks today (34) and picked up her first career shot.

-Maddie Roberts, with her fifth assist on the year, sits in second in the conference in the category.
