Greeley, Colo – Things are beginning to tighten in the race towards the Big Sky Conference Tournament. Sunday's battle between Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado could prove vital in the final standings. As it sits, the Lumberjacks cling on to the sixth and final spot, while the Bears are a mere one point behind.
Games have always been close between these two schools. The all-time series remains tied a 6-6, and each of the last three meetings have dived into overtime before either team could capture a final decision.
Northern Arizona is traveling down from Grand Forks, North Dakota, where they earned their second Big Sky Conference victory on Friday night, laying down the Fighting Hawks 2-1.
Their other conference victory came in their opener against Portland State, where an 2-1 overtime victory launched them into Big Sky contention.
The Lumberjacks are no strangers to close games this season, already playing in four overtime games.
Northern Colorado is also coming off a bounce back performance after a disappointing weekend in Idaho.
The Bears exploded for three goals, two from sophomore midfielder Mariel Gutierrez and one from senior forward Sydney Schroeder.
A late goal in the 85th minute kept goalkeeper Madeline Burdick from another shutout, but the Bears defense remained stout in route to their fifth consecutive win at home.
