Northern Colorado and Bakersfield baseball played a great three game series, being capped off by a 7-6 CSUB walk-off win Sunday
The teams entered the final two innings all tied up at six. In the eighth neither team really had a threat with UNC being the only team to leave a man on base.
The ninth inning was a different story though. UNC loaded up the bases with two outs by the combination of a hit, hit by pitch and walk, but left them loaded as Jacob Ek (Columbus, Neb.) was robbed of a hit with a great play by the Bakersfield shortstop.
In the bottom half of the ninth, the Roadrunners' lead-off hitter walked and was sacrificed into scoring position for DH and cleanup hitter Max Carter. Carter would pull the 1-1 pitch down the left field line for the game winning double securing the series for Bakersfield.
The two teams played in a series that featured eight lead changes through the three games with neither team leading by more than two runs at any point. After this weekend's WAC action UNC sits in a three way tie for fourth place with North Dakota (18-22, 12-9 WAC) and Sacramento State (25-23, 12-9 WAC).
Northern Colorado once again got on the board first today, scoring one run in the top of the second. Dan Reese (Casper, Wyo.) would get a two out rally going when he worked a five pitch walk. The next hitter, Jake Garcia (Albuquerque, N.M.) would be hit by a pitch in a full count to get two runners on for Ek.
He would deliver with an RBI single through the left side to score Reese. The Bears lead wouldn't last long though as CSUB scored three runs of their own in the bottom half of the second.
The Roadrunners first five hitters in the inning reached safely allowing two to score. Another run scored on a sac fly to center to take a 3-1 lead through two.
UNC would regain the lead in the fourth when they put up a three spot of their own. Once again it was Reese who got the inning going, with a lead-off single through the left side. He would come around to score when the next batter, Garcia, roped a double down the left field line.
Garcia would score when the Bakersfield pitcher Nick Rogowski over threw the sacrifice bunt attempt by Ek allowing him to reach safely and advance to second. After Reyn
Sugai (Honolulu, Hawaii) sacrificed Ek over to third, fellow Hawaiian Jensen Park (Kaneohe, Hawaii) brought Ek home with a seeing eye single.
Just like in the second inning, CSUB would come back in the bottom half of the fourth inning to regain the lead. The Roadrunners would work a one out walk followed up by a groundout to move the runner over and a single to tie the game up. They would then take the lead on a Park error, allowing the second run of the inning to score and chasing starter Nick Tanner (Foothills Ranch, Calif.).
Tanner went 3 2/3 innings throwing 73 pitches allowing five runs, four of them earned on eight hits.
CSUB would add on another run in the sixth, before UNC would come back to tie the game again.
In the top of the seventh inning freshman Marco Castilla (Littleton, Colo.) got things started with a four pitch walk. Cole Maltese (Superior, Colo.) would follow it up with a single of his own to get two on with one out.
Maltese had the best offensive day of any Bear going 4-for-5 and scoring a run.
Senior Bryan Tibbitts (Westminster, Colo.) would drive one runner home when he hit a ball down the first base line that would end up hitting off the bag and rolling into the right field corner.
In the next at-bat Reese would record his second hit to brining in Maltese, while Tibbitts was thrown out at home trying to score just barely getting tagged. Reese went 2-for-3 scoring twice.
The Bears would end up stranding Reese, but go into the bottom of the seventh all tied up with UCSB, leading up to the walk-off hit.
Northern Colorado returns home for its final six games of the regular season with two pivotal WAC series. The first game starts on May 8 at 3:00 p.m. when the Bears host
Sacramento State for a three game weekend at Jackson Field.
