UNC baseball said good bye to its six seniors Saturday afternoon when they took on Seattle
GREELEY- The Northern Colorado Baseball team fell to Seattle Saturday afternoon 10-0 in seven innings as they said good bye to their six seniors in Caleb Kirkman, Brandon Vaughn, Jensen Park, Reyn Sugai, Josh Wagner and Bryan Tibbitts.
Despite the outcome of the game UNC gave senior Josh Wagner (Newhall, Calif.) a moment he will never forget. Wagner who appeared in just two games this season due to the need for Tommy John's surgery made one last appearance on the Jackson Field mound. To start the fifth inning the coaches and umpires had arranged for Wagner to throw one last honorary pitch. Wagner's pitch was a perfect strike his last time on the mound as a Bear.
For the game UNC was held to just two hits by some solid pitching from Seattle's pitcher Tarik Skubal who went all seven innings with 101 pitches. The two hits for UNC came from Tibbitts (Westminster, Colo.) and Cole Maltese (Superior, Colo.)
Seattle scored in the first inning again on Saturday having its first three batters reach base to load them up. UNC starter Alex Werbach (Brighton, Colo.) would strike out the next two hitters one swinging and one looking. Shortstop Griffin Anderychuk once again hurt the Bears with a two run single to get the Redhawks up early.
Seattle would add to its lead with two in the third and another in the fourth to make it 5-0.
The Bears would have their best threat in the bottom the fifth inning when they were trailing 5-0. Jake Ekman (Littleton, Colo.) would start the inning off with a five pitch walk.
After two straight outs, Jensen Park (Kaneohe, Hawaii) stepped into the batter's box and reached when Seattle's shortstop made a throwing error drawing the second baseman off the bag allowing Ekman to be safe.
Reyn Sugai (Honolulu, Hawaii) would then be hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brandon Vaughn (Louisville, Colo). Vaughn would get to a 1-2 and foul off back-to-back pitches, before striking out swinging to end the inning.
Seattle would put the game away in the seventh inning when they put a four spot up to make it a 10-0 game. The Redhawks earned their sixth run in the sixth inning.
UNC will now travel to Mesa, Ariz. for the WAC Tournament starting on Wednesday, May 20. The Bears will be the six seed in the double elimination tournament and face North Dakota at Hohokam Stadium, spring training home of the Oakland A's, first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.Â
