Northern Colorado baseball continued to hit NMSU hard tonight to earn a 10-1 victory
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Northern Colorado baseball team kept its hot bats going on Friday night against New Mexico State (4-23-1, 1-6-1 WAC), defeating the Aggies, 10-1.
The Bears (8-16, 5-3 WAC) outhit the Aggies 17-8 on the night and were paced by the bats of Nick Tanner (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Jensen Park (Kaneohe, Hawaii).
"It was another great all around team effort tonight for the guys," head coach Carl Iwasaki.
Tanner finished the night going 4-5 with three RBI and one run. Meanwhile Park also had four hits, one being a solo shot into the bleachers for his second homerun of the season to go with his three runs scored.
Just like the series opener on Thursday night, Northern Colorado got on the board early and often.
Reyn Sugai (Honolulu, Hawaii) started the game striking out, but reached base on a wild pitch and Park reached on a single through the left side to set the table for the heart of UNC's order. The Bears three and four hole hitters got out before Tanner recorded two of his three RBI with a single to left center to drive home Sugai and Park.
The Bears came right back in the third inning and extended their lead by putting up a four-spot. UNC led off with the top of the order again in the inning, getting three straight singles to push across one run, making it a 3-1 game. The team added on three more runs in the inning to go up 6-1 heading in to the fourth.
It was not just the bats that did the work tonight for the Bears, but also the pitching. Alex Werbach (Brighton, Colo.) earned his first career win going 5.2 innings, allowing just one run on six hits and fanning five NMSU batters. After Werbach exited Dylan Shiraki (Honokaa, Hawaii) came in and finished the game going 3.1 innings giving up just two hits with four strike outs.
"Getting back to back quality starts out of our starters in Werbach and Applebach has really helped us," Iwasaki said. "Having strong pitching along with the hot bats makes us a very tough team to beat."
UNC and NMSU will close out their three game series tomorrow at Noon, when the Bears go for the sweep. The probable pitching matchup is Nick Tanner vs Trey Higginbotham.
