Grand Canyon scored seven runs in the first inning to get past UNC
PHOENIX—Northern Colorado baseball fell to Grand Canyon on Friday night 12-4 after the 'Lopes scored seven runs in the first inning.
"The first inning was a rough one for us," head coach Carl Iwasaki said. "We were able to score first, but Grand Canyon is a very good team and that showed it in the bottom of the first when they scored the seven runs."
The Bears got on the board first, scoring a run in the first inning. Jensen Park (Kaneohe, Hawaii) reached base on a single to left field, and advanced to third via a wild pitch and sac fly.
Park finished the game 3-for-4 scoring two runs. He was the lone Bear to record multiple hits in the game.
UNC then loaded the bases after both Brandon Vaughn (Louisville, Colo.) and Nick Tanner (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) walked. Dan Reese (Casper, Wyo.) singled to score Park before the Bears ended the inning leaving the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the first Grand Canyon batted around, seeing its first eight players reach base safely. The first four reached via walks and the next four via hits, bringing in six runs. GCU tacked on another run before UNC ended the inning. The Bears threw three pitchers to get out of the jam.
Matt Loutzenhiser (Parker, Colo.) helped save Northern Colorado's bullpen going 5 innings allowing two runs on a hit.
UNC tried to chip away at the deficit scoring two more runs in the second. The Bears loaded the bases with three walks and scored one run on a Vaughn fielder's choice. The second run came across on a wild pitch. After two innings the 'Lopes led the Bears 7-3.
Grand Canyon rallied for five more runs between the sixth and seventh innings, while UNC scored its last run in the seventh.
"It is not the way we wanted to start the weekend, but we will come back strong tomorrow and play our game to even up this series," Iwasaki said.
The teams will play game two of the three game series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at 2:30 p.m.
