LINCOLN, Neb. — Triples did it again. Nebraska's Blake Headley had two again today, but it was Scott Schreiber's bases-loaded knock that was the back-breaker in UNC's 9-2 loss Wednesday.
After four combined runs allowed from Zach Heath and Chase Cleary in the first two innings, UNC (2-8) got on the board with a two-run home run in the fourth inning from freshman catcher Payton Tapia. Tapia's shot cleared the left-field wall, 335 feet away, by just a few inches.
Tapia finished the series 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, the home run, four RBIs, two walks, no strikeouts and two runners caught stealing.
"He's hitting his way into our lineup," head coach Carl Iwasaki said. "He has power, he has discipline at the plate and that kind of bat speed is great. And he's playing sound defense right now. He's only 10 games into his college career, and he's showing a lot of maturity."
The score stayed at 4-2 until the Huskers (9-6) hung five more runs on the board in the seventh inning. With a run already in off Justin Mulvaney, Matt Loutzenhiser came in with runners on the corners, walked a man, then allowed Schreiber's triple to center field. Schreiber battled through a nine-pitch plate appearance, including five straight foul balls, before he hit it just over the head of a shallow Jensen Park in center field.
"We were playing for a play at the plate in that situation," Iwasaki said. "Jensen Park can cover a lot of ground, and he could have had that ball."
Brandon Vaughn doubled to start the eighth inning but was stranded aboard and the Bears went down in order in the ninth to finish the series.
UNC had its chances, though, getting a runner to third base in each of the first two innings, but it came away empty.
"We didn't execute in the early innings, and it could have been an improvement for us to get some runs across for us," Iwasaki said. "Those are the opportunities we need to take advantage of."
UNC walked only three batters all game and did not commit an error, a far cry from Tuesday's game which featured six walks and four errors.
Aside from Tapia and Vaughn, Park and Ryan Yamane were the only other Bears to record hits Wednesday, but Dan Reese and Reyn Sugai each walked twice.
Caleb Kirkman pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless ball for UNC, allowing just two hits and two walks in his fourth appearance of the season. Left-handed pitcher Allen Cook was called on for one out — one pitch actually — to get the left-handed Austin Darby out. Cook got him to pop up to shortstop and then gave way to Mulvaney.
Heath drops to 0-1 this season after pitching an inning and giving up one run on three hits.
UNC will look to rebound from this loss at 5 p.m. MDT Friday at St. Louis University,
