Northern Colorado baseball opened it series against St. Louis Saturday, dropping both games
ST. LOUIS — Billikens senior outfielder Colton Frabasilio made up for Friday's rainout by powering Saint Louis University to a sweep of the doubleheader with Northern Colorado (2-10) Saturday.
Frabasilio hit three home runs in the two games, including a grand slam in each, to lift the Billikens to a 9-2 win in the first game and a 16-1 victory in the latter, which lasted seven innings with a run rule.
"No doubt, this is the best-hitting ball club we've seen this year," head coach Carl Iwasaki said.
After the Billikens (11-7) posted three runs in the second inning of the first game, SLU loaded the bases on three consecutive singles and Frabasilio unloaded them on the first pitch he saw, creating a 7-0 lead. SLU would tack on insurance runs in the fourth and seventh innings before UNC plated two in the ninth behind a pinch-hit RBI single from Marco Castilla and another single from catcher Jerry Lacayo.
Alex Werbach (0-2) took the loss in game one, going 3.1 innings and giving up eight earned runs on seven hits with three walks while striking out two. Chase Cleary finished the final 4.2 innings of the game, struck out four, allowed four hits, one earned run and one walk.
"The engine of any ball club is pitching. You got to be a run reducer, and Cleary came in and got us stabilized," Iwasaki said.
Brandon Vaughn had Northern Colorado's other two hits in the first game, and the runs were scored by Jensen Park and Ryan Yamane.
In the second game, Park tripled with one out in the first and scored on Vaughn's single, giving the Bears a 1-0 advantage. UNC was held without a hit until the seventh and final frame when Rob Cashel reached base.
Frabasilio put SLU ahead with a two-run shot in the second inning. SLU scored three more in the third, two more in the fourth, five more in the fifth behind Frabasilio's second grand slam. SLU capped it with four more in the sixth before the game was called in the seventh. In all, SLU put up 21 hits in the second game off five UNC pitchers.
UNC will have senior Josh Wagner on the hill for the final game of the series, which now begins at 1 p.m. (Central) Sunday. The time was changed from noon to allow the field another hour to dry.
