UNC baseball never said die on Friday night, having a four run rally in the ninth to tie the game before falling in the bottom of it
"It was a good fight from the team tonight in the late innings to tie up the game and looking for extras," said head coach Carl Iwasaki.
The Bears (0-1) entered the top of the ninth inning trailing by four runs, before putting together a long rally to tie it up.
Northern Colorado used three walks in four hitters to load the bases for Reyn Sugai (Honolulu, Hawaii) who hit a sac fly to bring home Payton Tapia (Fort Collins, Colo.) and cut the Spartans lead to three.
UNC then took advantage of an SJSU error to cut the SJSU lead to one with five hole hitter Brandon Vaughn (Louisville, Colo.) coming up to the plate. Vaughn reached first off of Josh Nashad to square the game up at eight runs each.
San Jose State got out of the jam and went on a rally of their own in the ninth inning that gave them a win.
"I am proud of the resilience and fight from our team in the first nine innings of the season," said Iwasaki.
David Campbell, reached base with one out for the Spartans, and advanced to third on an error during a pickoff attempt. After a pair of intentional walks to load the bases with one out in the inning, Justin Beck workes a game winning walk off walk.
Neither team played well defensively tonight with each committing three errors apiece. The Spartans out hit the Bears by one 8-7.
SJSU got out to an early lead with a home run in the first inning by Andre Mercurio to give them a 1-0 lead. The Spartans gathered two more runs in the third before the Bears would get on the board.
Dan Reese (Casper, Wyo.) drove in UNC's first run of the season in the fifth bringing in Vaughn. Vaughn finished the night 2-3 with a run, an RBI, and two walks.
Overall in the fifth inning the Bears put up three runs to tie the game, before SJSU added one of their own to take a 4-3 lead into the sixth. UNC responded once again with another run the sixth making it all square at 4 apiece.
San Jose State blasted four runs in the seventh to extend its lead out to four again, before UNC made its feverish comeback.
Chase Cleary (Arvada, Colo.) made his first start as a Bear Friday night, going 4.0 innings, with one strikeout while giving up four hits and four earned runs.
The Bears and Spartans will continue their series tomorrow with a double header starting out at 2:00 p.m.
"We need to come out tomorrow in game one and play sound defense and execute timely hits from the first inning," Iwasaki said.
