Behind the strong pitching efforts of Nick Tanner, UNC baseball earned a split against San Jose State on Saturday
SAN JOSE, Calif.—The Northern Colorado (1-2) baseball team seems to be setting a trend early on in the year of playing in exciting close games. The Bears continued their four game series with San Jose State (3-4) Saturday splitting the double header.
UNC picked up their first win of the season in the second game of the two games behind strong pitching from sophomore lefty Nick Tanner (Foothill Ranch, Calif.). Tanner went eight innings giving up only two hits and one run with five strike outs to pick up the 6-1 win.
The Bears got out to a quick start in the second game scoring two runs in the first inning, and allowing Tanner to go to work against the Spartans hitters. SJSU got one across the plate in the second to cut the Bears lead to 2-1, but that would be all they would score for the night.
In innings three through five Tanner retired nine of the ten batters he faced, with his only blemish being a walk.
"Nick had a great outing today for us," head coach Carl Iwasaki. "He came out and performed well and really got going in those mid innings for us."
Northern Colorado added on three insurance runs in the top of the seventh. The bottom of the team's order set the table, getting the based loaded for two-hole hitter Ryan
Yamane (Manoa, Hawaii) who drove in two runs off of a single.
Fellow Hawaiian Jensen Park (Kaneohe, Hawaii) batted in the third run of the inning on a fielder's choice.
Justin Mulvaney (Arvada, Colo.) came through in the ninth and closed the door for the Bears giving up only a single, while striking out the final batters of the game.
Northern Colorado's win came after another heartbreaking loss for the team in the first game of the day. San Jose State won the game 4-3 in walk-off fashion for the second game in a row in 10 innings.
"The first game was a heartbreaker again losing in extra innings, but we bounced back well in the second game," said Iwasaki.
The teams each scored a run in the first two innings, going into the third tied at 2.
SJSU took their first lead in the sixth on an error from Yamane.
The Bears didn't down long though, coming back with a run of their own in the seventh. Third baseman Cole Maltese (Superior, Colo.) stepped to the plate and hit his
first home run of the season down the left field line.
Between the two games Maltese finished 4-8, with three runs and two RBI.
San Jose State strung together a couple of hits in the 10th, before a Chris Williams' sac fly to left brought in the game winning run.
"We will take the momentum from game two into Sunday for the rubber match of the series to hopefully come out with the series split," Iwasaki said.
UNC and SJSU will finish their four game series tomorrow with first pitch at 2:00 p.m. MST.Â
