GRAND JUNCTION Colo. – The Northern Colorado wrestling team headed to Grand Junction, Colorado today to take on the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa (DII). The Mavericks came into the match with a solid 12-0 record on the year.
"The team won a hard fought dual against a very tough Mesa team," said head coach Troy Nickerson. "The last time we wrestled in their arena (2 years ago) they beat us. Overall it was a sloppy win but we will take it."
The first match of the day wouldn't last long with Andrews coming up with a pin against Channing Lewis, pinning him in the 1:21 minute. Andrews would move to 16-8 on the year, recording a total on six pins.
UNC dropped the next three matches, with Beau Roberts picking up a win right before intermission by a score of 8-5, defeating James Martinez, and moving to 6-7 on the year.
The Bears entered halftime, behind 15-9.
Coming out the break Mitchell Polkowske looked to dominate Bruno Nicoletti giving the Bears a chance to win the dual.
Polkowske scored a total of four takedowns in the first two rounds looking to capture the major decision in the match. Polkowske would do just that, dominating Nicoletti by a score of 13-2.
Despite the win, the Bears still trailed by two points with four matches to go in the evening.
Josh Van Tine continued his winning ways, taking the #174 weight class over Jessie Hoffschneider. Van Tine won the close match by a score of 6-2 giving Northern Colorado a 16-15 lead.
Keith Johnson made it three in a row for UNC, grabbing his win in the final seconds of the third period taking a 7-6 decision over Mitch Wyatt.
UNC would increase its lead to 4, winning 19-15.
In the #197 match, Trent Noon would keep it close through two periods, before getting caught by Francisco Retana who would finish the match by pin at the 6:11 mark.
Northern Colorado headed into the final match of the night trailing 21-19.
It would all come down to the heavyweights and Brian Macchione would do all he could to grab the win for the Bears.
The match was square at zeros entering the third period with Macchione choosing neutral to begin the final minutes of action. Macchione drew first blood in the third working a quick takedown with 1:30 left in the match. Jordan Passehl earned an escape bringing the match to a Macchione lead 2-1.
Macchione held off Passehl in the finals minutes giving the Bears the 22-21 win over the Mavericks.
The Bears improve to 3-5 on the season and are looking to pick up another win this Saturday, Feb. 14 at Utah Valley State. Wrestling is slated to start at 7:00 p.m.
