GREELEY, Colo. - Northern Colorado wrestling program has added Carter Schmidt to its roster, Head Coach Teyon Ware announced.
MEET THE SIGNEE
CARTER SCHMIDT | OKLAHOMA | BELGRADE, MONT.
Schmidt, a 141-pound wrestler from Belgrade, Montana, transfers to UNC after spending three seasons at the University of Oklahoma. He will continue his academic and athletic career while pursuing a degree in Health and Exercise Science, with an expected graduation year of 2027.
Â
A graduate of Belgrade High School (Class of 2023), Schmidt competed in wrestling throughout his prep career. He now brings his experience at the Division I level back closer to home as he joins the Bears.
"I wanted to move closer to home and keep wrestling for Coach Ware," Schmidt said.
Standing at 5-foot-10, Schmidt is the son of Karlina and Peter Schmidt. He has three siblings: Simon, Owen, and Wilson. Schmidt looks to make an immediate impact in the 141-pound weight class as UNC continues to build its program for the future.
At OU, Schmidt posted a 9–9 record at 133 pounds (7–8 vs. Division I opponents) with a 2–0 dual mark, recording three falls, three technical falls, and one major decision, highlighted by a 21–5 tech fall over Lance Olberding at the Norman Duals, a 4–1 showing at the Southern Scuffle, and additional wins at the Roadrunner Open and Cyclone Open.
During his 2023–24 redshirt season at 141 pounds, he went 10–6 (8–6 vs. D1 opponents), debuting at the Reno Tournament of Champions with a 4–2 finish and three pins, placing fifth at the Southern Scuffle with five wins, earning his first dual victory with a 10–3 decision over Wisconsin's Felix Lettini at the Virginia Duals, starting against South Dakota State and Oklahoma State, tallying six bonus-point wins (including four falls), and earning Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team honors.
