OREM, Utah -The Northern Colorado wrestling team finished their road trip on Valentine's Day taking on Utah Valley. The Bears would battle toe to toe with the Wolverines all night and it was UNC who would prevail with the 20-18 victory.
"Overall, it was a great weekend for the Bears," said head coach Troy Nickerson. "Today, our guys started off with a lot of fire and dominated from the feet and top positions. After the intermission, our guys struggled to compete with the same fire as they did in the first half."Â
UNC started the match off in style picking up two wins, one coming by forfeit and the other coming with Benjamin Polkowske beating Matthew Ontiveroa by decision, 6-1.
Â
The Bears snagged two more wins prior to intermission from Beau Roberts (2-0 Dec.) and Mitchell Polkoswke (18-0 TF).
Â
UNC entered the intermission with a very cushy, 17-3 lead.
Â
The Bears lead wouldn't last long dropping the first three matches out of the intermission making it a, 17-15 match.
Â
The wrestling team needed a win in the final two matches and Brian Macchione answered for UNC.
Â
Macchione went the distance with Jordan Karst in the heavyweight matchup needing overtime to seal the deal. Macchione left the mat with a 3-1 victory.
"Brian really won the dual for us tonight," said Nickerson. "He was in deep on a leg attack in overtime when his opponent had him beat defensively. Brian refused to give up and won the scramble."Â
The Bears advance to 4-5 on the season, riding a three match winning streak.
Â
The wrestling team will be back on the mat, Feb. 18 on the road against Air Force. Wrestling will start at 7:00 p.m.Â
