Day One Recap
LAS VEGAS - Northern Colorado finished their outing at the 34th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday, with Trey Andrews the lone Bear to place.
After eight eliminations on Friday night, Andrews (125) and Trent Noon (197) were the only two wresters to compete Saturday morning, both in the consolation brackets of their respective weights.
"I think overall it was a good tournament," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "We learned a lot about ourselves and the areas we need to work on. Overall as a team our guys did a great job on top; we really dominated a lot of the mat-wrestling. We need to get better at getting the go-to leg attack and hand fighting on our feet."
Andrews advanced in his first round of the day after a medical forfeit by his opponent, officially securing a top-eight placement.
Noon would face off against Army's Bryce Barnes in the blood round. Despite starting the match strong, Noon was unable to pull out the win, getting eliminated from the tournament with a 5-4 decision loss.
"We saw some great signs from Trent this weekend. The Oregon State match was a really good one for him. His match today was disappointing - he dominated most of it but just didn't get the job done at the end. That's the kind of thing we'll have to continue to work on."
In the second consolation round, Andrews met Paul Petrov (Bucknell), whom he defeated with a 13-5 major decision last year on this same day of the tournament. The Bucknell wrestler came out on top this time, though, knocking Andrews into the 7th-place match with a 10-5 decision.
In the 125-pound 7th place match, Andrews faced David Terao of American for the second time in the tournament. Despite multiple scrambles and late third period takedowns by Andrews, Terao pulled out the win again, 19-10 this time, to close out Andrews' tournament with an eighth-place finish.
"Trey wrestled a great tournament. Coming in unseeded and finishing eighth - it's a tough weight. Anytime you come in and have the returning Nationals runner-up not place, you know it's a tough weight. I'm proud of him. He was in every match to win it."
The Bears will break from competition for the remainder of 2015, returning to the mat on Jan. 1-2 when they travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the 2016 Southern Scuffle.
