GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado wrestling team makes the 1300 mile journey to Chattanooga, Tennessee to kick off the 2016 year with the Defense Soap and Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Ten wrestlers will represent the Bears at the tournament, where over three hundred wrestlers will be competing representing 29 other teams in the country. Of the 30 teams attending, ten were ranked in preseason polls, including #1 Penn State, #2 Oklahoma State, #4 Cornell, and #9 Michigan.
Two of the attached wrestlers for the Bears have at least 10 wins on the season so far – Trent Noon [197] with 11 (one major decision, one technical fall, and two pins), and Timmy Box [149] with 15 (five major decisions, three technical falls, and four pins).
Noon won his first eight matches of the season to earn titles at 197-pounds at both the Northern Colorado and Cowboy Opens and winning his first two dual matches of the year. He currently stands at 11-3 this season and is one of three Bears to make it to the NCAA Tournament last season.
Box, a transfer from CSU-Bakersfield, is 15-7 on the season, earning himself a third place finish in his first tournament as a Bear (the Northern Colorado Open). He currently has the most major decisions and wins overall on the team, and is also tied for most technical falls and pins on the season.
Also competing for the Bears this weekend are Rico Montoya [133], Sonny Espinoza [141], Colton Orrino [141], Ben Polkowske [149], Joseph Grable [157], Tyler Kinn [165], Tanner Davis [174], and Jack Kuck [HWT].
Espinoza, Polkowske, and Noon all came to the tournament last year with the team, when the team finished 27th overall with 14 total team points.
This is the fourth time the UNC squad has made it out for the Scuffle, starting in 2013 when they placed a program-best 23rd at the tournament. In 2014, they landed a 26th place finish.
Alongside the ten attached wrestlers, two true freshman from Northern Colorado will be competing in the Scuffle - Sean Cannon [141] and Jacob Seely [197]. Both of the freshmen will compete unattached from the team and will not be able to accumulate team points for the Bears.
The two-day tournament will be held in the McKenzie Arena on January 1st and 2nd, starting at 7:00AM MT on Friday. Competition on the first day will run through three rounds of the championship and consolation brackets. Saturday morning also kicks off at 7:00AM MT with the championship quarterfinals. Championship finals will be at 5:00PM MT on Saturday, along with medal (3rd, 5th, 7th place) matches.
All-session passes cost $15 for general admission (youth) or $35 for adults, or $55 for reserved seating. Single-session passes are $10 or $20 for general admission (youth and adults, respectively), or $30 for reserved. To buy tickets online, click here.
