Trey Andrews and Trent Noon remain in the tournament in the consolation brackets
LAS VEGASÂ - The Northern Colorado wrestlers finished out the first day of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational this evening, with two wrestlers still in the tournament.
Trey Andrews remains in the tournament at 125 pounds, going 3-1 on the day. Andrews earned a win by fall in his first round match against Patrick Kearney (The Citadel) before moving to the consolation bracket after a loss to American's David Terao. On the back side, Andrews picked up a major decision win and then advanced to the second consolation round of eight after a MFF by Nick Herrmann (Virginia). Andrews placed fourth last year, going 5-2 throughout the two days.
At 197 pounds, Trent Noon also went 3-1, making his way into the quarterfinals with a win by technical fall over Purdue's Drake Stein and then two close decision wins - over Cody Crawford (Oregon State), 5-4, followed by Ohio State's Mark Martin, 2-1. Noon met Max Huntley of Michigan in the quarterfinals, losing 7-2 to get knocked into the consolation bracket. Noon landed a sixth place finish at the tournament last season, going 4-3 overall.
Rico Montoya picked up one win at 133 pounds in his first appearance at the Cliff Keen Invitational: a technical fall (19-2) over Boise State's Josh Newburg.
In his first outing of the season, Ben Polkowske went 2-2, with his two wins coming over Gunner Wolfensperger of Northern Iowa (8-4) and Jacob Leon of Cal Poly (6-3).
Dylan Gabel also earned wins on the day, pinning his first opponent at 3:37 (Iowa State's Dan Pestano) and earning a 5-1 decision win over Hofstra opponent, Cory Damiana.
Both Andrews and Noon will wrestle tomorrow morning in the consolations, starting at 10AM MT. Andrews will face Dylan Peters of Northern Iowa, while Noon will face Army's Bryce Barnes.
