UNC lost to the Vandals, 2-0, in Sunday afternoon's match-up
GREELEY, Colo. - UNC Soccer lost to the Idaho Vandals Sunday afternoon, 2-0, in their final home game of the 2015 season.Â
Â
Overall, the Bears outshot the Vandals 14-12, but took only five shots on goal compared to IU's six.
This was the fifth time the Bears have played the Vandals, in a series that now stands at 1-4-0.
The first half of the game got off to a fast start for Idaho, but the Bears were able to fight to make the remainder of the half far more evenly matched. Junior Paige Morris got things going for the Bears at the start of the game, taking a header shot on goal in just the third minute of play.
In the Vandals' first shot of the game (5th minute), following a cross and rebound, Clara Gomez put the first goal of the game into the net, giving Idaho a 1-0 advantage.
Just two minutes later, the Vandals fired off another three rapid shots in front of the goal, but all three attempts were thwarted, as all of the remaining Idaho attempts in the half would be.
Mariel Gutierrez took the Bears' second attempt on goal in the 22nd minute, and Adrienne Jordan rounded out the first-half attempts in the 39th minute, but neither could get past the Idaho goalkeeper to tie up the game.Â
Â
Time expired in the first period with UI up 1-0.
The UNC squad fought hard to keep the ball near the Vandal goal in the second half, taking nine shots total - two on goal. Maddie Chase made a huge save for the team, just barely knocking a Vandal shot out of the goal.
The Vandals made it past the Bear defense one more time, however, securing their win in the 82nd minute with a header goal off of a corner kick.
Despite their attempts, the Bears were unable to get past the Idaho defense, ending the game UI 2, UNC 0.
The Vandals secured the Big Sky regular season champion-title with this win over the Bears, earning the right to host the post-season tournament in two weeks. The Bears are still vying for second place, though, which would grant them a first-round bye in the Tournament.
Next weekend concludes the 2015 regular season for the Bears, when they travel up to Grand Forks, N.D. to face North Dakot on Friday night [Oct. 30, 2:00PM MT].
