RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Northern Colorado earned a 1-0 road victory over UC Riverside Thursday evening at UC Riverside Soccer Stadium, using an early goal from Lexi Tuite and a strong defensive effort to secure the shutout.

The Bears improved to 3-3-2 on the season and picked up their second consecutive victory.

"Really pleased with a good win on the road," head coach Tim Barrera said. "I thought we got good play from a lot of players."

Northern Colorado broke through in the 20th minute. Ava Marshall helped create the opportunity with a strong individual effort before Anneliese Wong set up Tuite, who finished the chance at the 19:26 mark to put UNC ahead 1-0.

Barrera credited the buildup that led to Tuite's finish.

"A great individual effort by Ava Marshall with the dribble and creating the shot on goal, and Lexi cleaned up the rebound," Barrera said. "Good to get Lexi scoring again."

The Bears generated six shots in the opening half compared to two from UC Riverside and carried their one-goal advantage into the break.

UNC's defense protected the lead throughout the second half despite increased pressure from the Highlanders. Goalkeeper Thordis Melsted finished with two saves and recorded the clean sheet, while the Bears limited UC Riverside to four total shots and two on goal.

"They put us under some pressure, but I thought for the most part we defended well and created enough to get the victory," Barrera said.

Northern Colorado finished with a 9-4 advantage in shots and placed five attempts on target. Tuite led the Bears with three shots, including two on goal, while Abby Bush added two attempts.

The result gave UNC another road victory as the Bears continue through their non-conference schedule.
"Wins on the road are always good," Barrera said. "Pleased with the effort."
