COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Juliana Grover picked the perfect time to score her first goal of the season. Grover's goal in the second overtime of the match helped lift the Bears (2-3-0) to a, 2-1 victory over Air Force (0-3-0) in the opening game of the Falcon Invitational on Friday night.Â
UNC rallied late, scoring off a free kick in the 81st minute of the contest to send the game into overtime. From there, the Bears kept the momentum going and picked up the win, handing the Falcons their second consecutive overtime loss.
"We really asked the players to push themselves tonight," said head coach Tim Barrera. "It was a great game to be a part of. Both teams battled throughout the entire match and we were able to come out on top."
It was a familiar situation in the first half for UNC with neither team giving up any ground. The Bears' offense had plenty of opportunities in the first 45 minutes of action, accumulating nine shots, three of them on-goal, a season high for Barrera's club in one half of play.
"Air Force is a really talented team," Barrera said. "They are a young group just like us with a lot of experience. We knew that the first half would be a challenge. We had plenty of good looks at the net, but just didn't get one to fall."
The Falcons struck first in the 53rd minute of the second half when forward, Megan Schulze received a cross from the end line and found the back of the net from 10 yards out to give Air Force the, 1-0 advantage.
The Falcons continued to pressure UNC, getting off four more shots over the next 20 minutes, but the Bears found an opportunity off a free kick and took advantage of it. Junior midfielder, Morgan Rynearson kicked a perfectly placed ball into the center of the box, finding sophomore midfielder, Paige Morris who scored off the header to even the score at, 1-1. The goal was also the first of the season for Morris.
"We went into attack mode after they scored," said Barrera. "I was very proud of the way we handled the pressure of being down late. We've been in this situation the last two games, but never found a way to finish and tonight we did that."
90 minutes of regulation was not enough time to determine the outcome, so they headed to overtime at Cadet Stadium.
Coming off the momentum of the game-tying goal it all Bears in the first overtime, producing three corner kicks and two shots on the Falcon defense, but were unable to capitalize on the attacks.
It wasn't until the 104th minute of the contest when sophomore midfielder,Sydney Schroeder connected with senior forward, Juliana Grover on a through-ball who fired from 20 yards out to score the game winner.
The Bears outshot the Falcons in the contest, 18-16. Sophomore goalkeeperKaitlin Ruff racked up five saves in the win.
UNC continues play in the Falcon Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 7, when they host Southeast Missouri State at Jackson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
