- Led the team with 112 tackles, 65 unassisted
- Made 1.5 tackles for a loss
- Intercepted a pass against Sacramento State
- Forced two fumbles and recovered one
- Tied career-high with 20 tackles against Idaho State.
- Recorded six games with 10-plus tackles.

2017
- Earned a starting linebacker spot for the UNC defense in his redshirt sophomore campaign.
- He started in six of the seven games he played. Nelson led the team in tackles in three contests with a career-high 20 at Montana.
- He had 17 against Idaho State and 14 against Cal Poly to lead the team in those games.
- For the season he finished with 79 tackles including 4.5 for a loss.
- The linebacker had 1.5 sacks on the year while also forcing a fumble and intercepting a pair of passes.
