Bears Battle Creighton Before Late Goal Decides Match

OMAHA, Neb. – Northern Colorado women's soccer went toe-to-toe with Creighton Friday afternoon, battling the Bluejays through nearly 90 scoreless minutes before falling 1-0 on a late goal at Morrison Stadium.
Creighton applied pressure early, but the Bears weathered the opening half and entered the break with the match scoreless. UNC responded with a stronger second half, creating six shots and generating five corner kicks as the Bears pushed for the opening goal.
Head coach Tim Barrera saw his team settle into the match as it progressed.
"We played pretty even in the second half," Barrera said. "We created some more opportunities. We had five corners to their one, so I think we grew into the game."
UNC continued to battle a physical Creighton side throughout the second half. Ava Marshall, Abby Bush, Lexi Tuite and Nora Dougherty were among the Bears Barrera credited for their performances.
"Ava Marshall was fantastic," Barrera said. "Abby Bush gave us good shifts in there, holding down the middle and battling because Creighton is a tough, physical team."
The Bears kept the Bluejays off the board until the closing moments. Creighton's Sarah Hyde scored with 88:25 on the clock, breaking the scoreless tie and giving the Creighton the eventual 1-0 victory.
Northern Colorado finished with 10 shots and four on goal. Maddie Mori led the attack with four shots, including two on target, while Sunnie Yarnell recorded two shots with both on goal. Thordis Melsted finished with six saves.
Despite the difficult ending, Barrera was encouraged by the contributions throughout UNC's lineup.
"Overall, I just thought we got really good efforts from a lot of people," Barrera said.
