The marathon contest marked the longest game in Summit League history, with the Bears grinding through extra innings before finally walking it off in the 21st. With the victory, Northern Colorado extended its winning streak to three games.
The two teams traded blows early, with St. Thomas jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Bears responded quickly and kept the game within reach, tying things up multiple times throughout regulation. Key hits from Jaden Stone and Logan Pruski helped Northern Colorado stay even, as the game was deadlocked at 5-5 after nine innings.
From there, both teams' pitching staffs took over, combining for nine scoreless extra innings as neither side could break through. Trevor Landen delivered a strong effort out of the bullpen to keep the Bears in the game deep into extras, while the offense continued to search for a timely hit.
St. Thomas finally broke the stalemate in the 19th inning, plating a run to take a 6-5 lead. However, Northern Colorado answered immediately in the bottom half, as Jake Bullard drove in the tying run before Brandon Sanchez followed with an RBI single to give the Bears a 7-6 advantage.
In the bottom half of the 21st inning, Northern Colorado capitalized on its opportunity, pushing across the winning run to secure the 8-7 victory and cap off the record-setting game with a walk-off balk.
Logan Borboa earned the win on the mound after tossing the final 2.1 innings, while the Bears totaled 12 hits in the contest. Jaden Stone led the offense with four hits, and Logan Pruski added three hits and two RBIs in the effort.
GAME TWO UPDATE: Due to darkness, Game two of the series was suspended and will resume tomorrow, as the teams look to continue the series following the historic opener with the Bears trailing 11-3 in the top of the ninth inning.
