GREELEY, Colo. — Northern Colorado closed out its Big Sky opening weekend with a dominant 9-1 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon at Gloria Rodriguez Field, securing the series win.
The Bears set the tone early and broke the game open in the second inning, plating six runs to take control. Amailee Morales delivered the decisive swing with a grand slam as part of a four-RBI day, highlighting a frame that capitalized on timely hitting and Hornet miscues.
Northern Colorado struck first in the opening inning on an RBI double from Ella Gonzales before the explosive second inning pushed the lead to 7-0.
The Bears added two more runs in the fourth, including another RBI from Gonzales, who finished a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Morales led the offense with two hits and four RBIs, while Katie Walling added a pair of hits and an RBI. Northern Colorado totaled 10 hits in the win.
In the circle, Anna Wilming turned in a strong performance, tossing five innings and allowing just one run on four hits to earn her eighth win of the season.
Sacramento State's lone run came in the third inning, but the Bears' early offensive surge proved more than enough as Northern Colorado improved to 16-19 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky play.
