FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Northern Colorado split day two of the Colorado Classic DI Tournament Saturday at Ram Field, opening the day with a 3-0 shutout win over Creighton before dropping a 5-1 decision to Colorado State. The Bears move to 8-11 overall heading into Sunday's finale.
GAME 1: Northern Colorado 3, Creighton 0
Anna Wilming delivered a complete-game, two-hit shutout as Northern Colorado blanked Creighton 3-0 in the morning matchup. Wilming (5-2) worked all seven innings, allowing just two hits and four walks while holding the Bluejays scoreless and keeping Creighton off the board in every frame.
The Bears struck first immediately in the top of the first. Amailee Morales opened the offense with a double down the left-field line before Ella Gonzales followed with an RBI single through the left side to bring Morales home. Gonzales later scored on Katie Walling's RBI triple to right center, giving UNC a 2-0 lead before Creighton recorded its second out.
Northern Colorado added an insurance run in the sixth. Gonzales worked a walk, and after Walling singled, Krista Francia delivered an RBI single to left center to score Quinn Myers-Lenz (pinch runner) and extend the advantage to 3-0.
Morales finished 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, while Gonzales went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Walling added two hits and drove in a run with her first-inning triple. Wilming closed the door in the seventh, stranding a walk and ending the game with a called third strike to secure the shutout.
GAME 2: Colorado State 5, Northern Colorado 1
In the afternoon contest, Northern Colorado and Colorado State were locked in a 1-1 game through five innings before the Rams used a four-run sixth to pull away for a 5-1 win.
Katie Walling provided the Bears' lone run with a solo home run to deep left in the top of the third, giving UNC an early 1-0 lead. Colorado State answered in the fourth with an unearned run to tie the game, and the contest remained even until the Rams capitalized on traffic and defensive miscues in the sixth.
Colorado State scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, using walks and a two-RBI double from Kyra Smith to create separation. Northern Colorado totaled seven hits but was unable to generate a multi-run response against Reagan Wick, who went the distance in the circle.
Walling went 2-for-3 with the home run, while Hayden Nelson recorded two hits. Grace Algrim started in the circle for UNC and allowed one unearned run in 4.1 innings. Aiyana Cordero took the loss in relief.
