Bears and Lady Grizz Combine for 8 Homeruns

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado erupted for 19 runs on 16 hits in a dominant 19–9 win over Montana on Thursday afternoon in Greeley. The Bears' offense caught fire early and never let up, scoring in each of the first four innings to put the game out of reach before the midway point.

After Montana jumped ahead 3–2 in the first inning with a three-run homer by Madison Tarrant, Northern Colorado responded in force. Ella Gonzales blasted a three-run homer in the second inning, and Nya Chacon followed with one of her two home runs on the day, a three-run shot, to put UNC ahead 8–3. The Bears added six more in the third, highlighted by long balls from Katie Walling, Sabrina Javorsky, and another from Chacon.

Javorsky continued her huge day with a five-RBI performance, going 3-for-3 with a homer and a pair of singles. Chacon led the team with six RBIs, while Gonzales went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored. In all, four different Bears drove in multiple runs.

Though Montana showed some fight with solo home runs from Grace Hardy and Presley Jantzi and a pair of late runs in the fifth, they couldn't keep pace with Northern Colorado's relentless scoring. The Lady Griz committed no errors, but their pitching staff struggled, surrendering 19 runs (all earned) and issuing six walks across four innings.

Grace Algrim (2–5) picked up the win for the Bears, tossing 4.1 innings in relief and allowing six runs (five earned) while striking out two. Grace Haegele (1–10) took the loss for Montana, giving up six runs in just 0.2 innings of work.

With the win, Northern Colorado will play in the semi-final tomorrow, May 9, at 12 p.m. against either Portland State or Sacramento State.
