Offensive Explosion Powers Bears to Wild 16-10 Victory Over St. Thomas

Bears Score 11 Runs In Eighth Inning

Trailing 9-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Bears (18-31, 9-19) unleashed an offensive onslaught, sending 15 batters to the plate and collecting eight hits in the frame. The defining blow came off the bat of senior outfielder Jake King, who blasted a grand slam to center field, capping off the inning and giving UNC a 16-9 lead.

King finished the day 4-for-5 with four RBIs, including a triple and his second home run of the season. He was one of five Bears to record multi-hit games in the 17-hit performance.

Senior Carter Monda also starred at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, and three runs scored. Brandon Sanchez added three RBIs on two hits, and Craig Kenny contributed a pair of hits, including a key sacrifice fly and an RBI double.

On the mound, Lucas Stone (1-2) picked up his first win of the season after relieving during St. Thomas' four-run eighth inning and halting the momentum. Starter Murphy Gienger pitched six strong innings, allowing five runs while striking out three.

St. Thomas (27-20, 19-9) jumped ahead with a four-run sixth inning and extended its lead in the eighth, but the Bears answered with their 11-run inning. UNC's plate discipline and aggressive baserunning paid off, and a wild pitch, hit-by-pitch, and passed ball all contributed to the Bears capitalizing on every opportunity.

The Tommies added one in the ninth, but Luke Guest closed the door with a clean final out to seal the win for the home team.

The two teams will face each other tomorrow at noon at Jackson field for the second game in the three-game series.
