Barber & Sanchez With Two Hits Each
GREELEY, Colo. - Northern Colorado squared-off with St. Thomas (MN) on Friday afternoon at Jackson Field but could not keep pace with the St. Thomas offense, falling 11–2.
The Bears (18–32) struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Brett Barber hit a double to left center and later came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Jake Bullard. The early momentum gave UNC a 1–0 lead, but a big third inning from the Tommies would tilt the game in the visitors' favor. St. Thomas (28–21) would open up a 5–1 lead by the end of the third inning.
The Bears battled back in the sixth, cutting into the deficit when Kai Wagner singled and later scored on an infield error to make it 6–2. However, the Tommies offense would prove to be too much in the end.
Barber and Brandon Sanchez each notched two hits for the Bears, with Bullard driving in a run and adding a stolen base. Sanchez added a double and a single as part of UNC's eight-hit effort.
On the mound, Trevor Landen (1–6) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) over 2.2 innings. Hunter Gibson and the bullpen worked to keep the Bears close into the middle innings, but a big rally by St. Thomas in the seventh proved too much to overcome.
Northern Colorado will look to earn the series win in the final game set for Saturday at Jackson Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
