Northern Colorado explodes for nine runs in five innings behind Wilming’s impressive performance, rebounding from game one loss in Ogden
OGDEN, Utah – Behind a perfect game from Anna Wilming and an explosive 9-run outburst across two innings in game two, Northern Colorado earned a doubleheader split against Weber State on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Softball Field. After dropping game one, 7-2, the Bears bounced back in a big way to blank the Wildcats, 9-0, in five innings.
GAME ONE | Weber State 7, Northern Colorado 2
Pitching: (L) Isabelle DiNapoli (7-11); (W) Jayci Finch (3-6)
Weber State used a six-run sixth inning and a grand slam from Riley Whalen to rally past Northern Colorado in the opener. Despite holding a 2-1 lead in the fifth, the Bears couldn't contain the Wildcats' late-inning surge.
Northern Colorado grabbed the lead on back-to-back RBI singles from Ella Gonzales and Krista Francia. But Weber State flipped the script in the sixth behind a two-run double from Tori Rey and Whalen's grand slam to center.
Isabelle DiNapoli was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on two hits and eight walks over 5.2 innings. Jayci Finch earned the win in relief for the Wildcats with two scoreless innings.
GAME TWO | Northern Colorado 9, Weber State 0 (5 inn.)
Pitching: (W) Anna Wilming (6-10); (L) RJ Parra (0-3)
Northern Colorado erupted for four runs in the second and five more in the third to back Wilming's historic outing in the circle. The sophomore right-hander tossed the program's second perfect game under head coach Dedeann Pendleton-Helm, retiring all 15 batters she faced on just 63 pitches while striking out four.
Offensively, Kenzie Carter sparked the Bears' attack, going 1-for-2 with a two-run double and two runs scored. Jaycie Gandert added a two-run triple, while Gonzales and Amailee Morales each chipped in RBIs during the Bears' second-inning rally. Northern Colorado kept the pressure on in the third with five more runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Gonzales and an RBI knock by Morales.
Gandert reached base three times and recorded a game-high three RBIs, while five different Bears drove in runs as UNC's offense capitalized on timely hitting and clean execution.
