Northern Colorado surrenders late lead in game one, falls behind early in game two against the Broncos

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado opened its home schedule with a pair of losses against Santa Clara at Gloria Rodriguez Field, falling 6-5 in game one before dropping game two, 9-5.

Northern Colorado fell just short in a 6-5 loss to Santa Clara in the opening game of the series.

The Bears held a 5-1 lead going into the top of the sixth, but Santa Clara took control with a five-run burst in the sixth and seventh innings, erasing UNC's early lead.

Amailee Morales and Nya Chacon led the Bears at the plate, going 1-for-2 and 2-for-3 and combining for a double, two home run's, and four RBIs.

On the mound, Isabelle DiNapoli went six innings for UNC, allowing five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Grace Algrim picked up the loss after entering a tied game in the seventh and giving up the winning run.

A six-run fourth inning proved to be the difference as Santa Clara pulled away for a 9-5 win in game two.

UNC stayed within striking distance thanks to Ella Gozales's three-RBI performance, highlighted by a two-run homer to right center. Sabrina Javorsky was hot at the plate, scoring twice while and going 2-for-3.

The Bears threatened late, pushing across two runs in the final innings, but Santa Clara's bullpen held firm.

Wilming took the loss for UNC, surrendering six earned runs over 3.2 innings. Algrim pitched the final three frames, allowing one run on six hits.

UP NEXT
The Bears are back at home tomorrow morning for another doubleheader against the Broncos, with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m.
