UNC Falls 8-7 in Series Opener
GREELEY, Colo. – Tony Castonguay powered the offense in Northern Colorado's 8-7 setback to North Dakota State at Jackson Field Friday.
Castonguay homered and doubled in four at-bats, driving in three for UNC (7-14, 2-2 Summit), while Craig Kenny went 3-for-5 at the dish.
The Bears overcame four unearned runs in the first, tying the game at 6-6 in the seventh on a pinch-hit single by AJ Carter. Carter, who replaced James Wright, laced the first pitch he saw into leftfield, plating Castonguay and Kenny.
North Dakota State (5-15, 3-1 Summit) broke the deadlock with a two-out triple, moving in front 8-6 in the final frame.
Kenny flared a single into right field, scoring Jake King and advancing Jake Bullard into scoring position, with one out in the bottom of the ninth. The Bears left the tying and winning run on base as the next two batters went down on strikes and a grounder to the first baseman.
Brett Barber inked a 2-for-4 game, with a run scored and a stolen base.
King, Carter Monda, Bullard, Wright and Carter tallied a knock each.
Murphy Gienger netted his second quality start in five starts this season. He allowed two earned runs over 6.0 innings of work, with two base-on-balls and five strikeouts. Gienger lowered his earned-run-average 4.40 runs over the last three starts.
The teams meet in the middle game of the series at noon Saturday.
