Bears Place Ninth in Mexico

Vahvaselka records a top-10 finish
PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – Antti Vahvaselka posted a 2-over par 218 and placed ninth at the Vaqueros Intercollegiate – hosted by UTRGV – at the Iberostar Playa Paraíso Golf Club (par 72/6,701 yards) Tuesday.
Vahvaselka closed with a 74 Tuesday, after shooting a 71 and a 73 over the first two rounds. He tallied four birdies in each round. He played the front nine in 3-under par during the three rounds, firing five swings over on the back nine.
UNC placed ninth with a 301-305-302—908, four swings behind Denver in eighth and four fewer than UTRGV and Wichita State, which tied for 10th. SMU won the team title with an 864, while UTEP placed second at 879 and North Texas posted the third-lowest total at 884.
Westin Pals gained nine positions Tuesday and earned a 21st-place finish. Following his 76 Sunday and 74 Monday, Pals completed the event with a 73 Tuesday for 223 over the 54 holes. He carded five birdies over the first 36 holes, before inking five over the last 18.
Palmer Mutcheson posted his third-consecutive 77 of the tournament, placing 46th at 231.
JaeSeung Na registered a 77-81-78--236, while Talan Gover rounded out the team scoring with an 87-83-89—259.
Playing as an individual, Cooper Tate posted an 82-81-79—242.
The Bears return to the course Feb. 16 at the Loyola Intercollegiate, hosted by Loyola (Md.), at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.
