Caviness Throws a one-hitter; offense overpowers the Wildcats
POCATELLO, Idaho – Erin Caviness – Big Sky Pitcher of the Year - tossed a one-hitter and the offense provided her with enough run support as Northern Colorado advanced to the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference Championship Thursday.
UNC utilized a seven-run third inning to roll to a mercy rule victory over Weber State 8-0 at Miller Ranch Stadium.
The regular-season and top-seeded Bears take on No. 3 Sacramento State at 11 a.m. Friday. The Hornets advanced to the semifinals with a 7-5 win over No. 6 Montana Wednesday and a 7-5 victory over No. 2 Idaho State Thursday. All games are streamed live on ESPN+.
Caviness tossed her 18th complete game and ninth shutout of the season, tossing 5.0 innings in the circle. She faced two batters over the minimum, without allowing either runner to advance past first base. The third batter went to first after a hit-by-pitch and Caviness allowed a two-out single in the third.
Amailee Morales – Big Sky Co-Player of the Year – and Ella Gonzales scored a run and drove in two apiece in the bottom of the third. Jaycie Gandert and Lauren Strathearn delivered an RBI single and Jazzy Longo worked a bases-loaded walk. The Bears sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame.
Morales led off the third with a walk and jogged home on the third home run of the season by Gonzales. UNC busted the contest open as six of the next seven Bears reached, with five crossing the plate. Morales closed the scoring with an opposite single inside the left-field line, driving in Quin Myers-Lenz and Gandert.
UNC Strathearn opened the first with a lead-off single and scored the first run on a two-out RBI single by Alison Steinker.
