Bears Use Big Inning to Cruise Past Jackrabbits

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado used a seven-run fourth inning to down South Dakota State 13-5 Friday at Jackson Field.
Garrett Fisher led the Bears with four hits and three runs-batted-in, while Dylan Smith earned his second win of the season, with a quality start.
UNC sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring seven and flipping a 2-1 deficit into an 8-2 advantage. The Bears capitalized on three errors, two walks and hit Carter Monda with a pitch both plate appearances in the frame. Austin Bunn delivered the big blow, a three-run home run over the left field wall.
Smith allowed two runs, scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out five in 6.0 innings of work. He allowed both runs in the second frame on two hits and a hit-by-pitch.
The Bears added to their gap with one in the fifth and three more in the sixth, building a 12-2 advantage.
South Dakota State avoided losing via run rule with three tallies – two unearned - in the eighth.
Monda capped the scoring when he crossed the dish in the eighth.
Fisher went 4-for-5, with a run scored and three RBIs. Bunn tallied his seventh homer of the campaign, tying for the team lead and added a single in five at-bats. Caden Wagner went 2-for-4, with two base-on-balls, a run scored and another driven in. Carter Monda added two hits, while Dalton Miller and Jackson Romero netted one each.
Trevor Landen relieved Smith and allowed three runs – one earned – on two hits and one walk while fanning one. Jack Tuttle retired all six batters he faced, with two by strikeout, in 2.0 scoreless innings.
The Bears improved to 4-0 against the Jackrabbits this season, outscoring South Dakota State 77-31 in the four games.
