Pitching Dominant in DH Split at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Northern Colorado earned a split in a doubleheader behind strong pitching performances.
UNC claimed a 4-1 victory over St. Thomas in the first game of the twin bill Saturday at Koch Diamond. Garrett Fisher delivered the big blow, blasting a two-run home run in the fifth.
Murphy Gienger improved to 4-2 on the campaign. In his first start of the season, he allowed one run and scattered six hits and five walks, while striking out four in seven innings of work. The senior from Castle Rock, Colorado, started on the bump for the fifth time in 37 career appearances.
Jake Carvajal tossed the final two frames for his first save of the season. He retired six of the seven hitters he faced, allowing one hit while punching out one.
UNC cashed in a pair of errors and built a 2-0 lead, with solo tallies in the first and the third. The Tommies cut the margin in half in the home third. Fisher increased the gap to three, slamming his sixth home run of the season on the first pitch he saw in the fifth.
In the nightcap, Jake Storey took the hill for the Bears for the fourth time this season. He tossed a career-high 6.1 innings, allowing one unearned run, three hits, one base-on-balls and striking out four.
The Bears broke the ice with a run in the fifth on a throwing error.
In the sixth, St. Thomas tallied the equalizer. The Tommies loaded the bags in the 10th, with a pair of hit batters and a walk, before a single ended the contest.
