OMAHA, Neb. – Murphy Gienger dominated on the mound and Craig Kenny delivered the game winning hit in the eighth inning for Northern Colorado Sunday.
Gienger tossed a career-high 6 and 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in the Bears 3-1 triumph over Omaha in the series finale at Tal Anderson Field.
He earned his third win of the season and posted a season-high six strikeouts, scattering three hits and walking one. Gienger retired 20 of the 24 batters he faced, including both in the third, with one on, one in and one out for Omaha in the frame.
Kenny's second hit of the game, a two-out bouncer up the middle plated Caden Wagner for the eventual game winner.
UNC added an insurance tally in the ninth on Garret Fisher's second RBI of the game. The Bears opened the frame with back-to-back singles by Jackson Romero and Carson Gross.
After a pop out and a ground out put two in scoring position, Fisher bounced one to the third baseman and hustled down the line. Romero scampered home and the Mavericks third baseman charged an advancing Gross, who retreated enough to avoid being tagged, allowing the run to count.
Gross registered the first hit of the game for UNC with one out in the sixth and moved to second when Brandon Sanchez followed with a base-on-balls. Fisher laced a single into left field and Gross scurried home and evened the score at 1-1.
Gross, Fisher and Kenny accounted for six of the Bears' hits, with two each, while Dalton Miller tallied the seventh knock.
Trevor landed made the start on the bump, tossing 2.1 innings and allowed three hits, one walk and fanning one.
