Northern Colorado Sweeps Weber State in Friday Doubleheader

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado rolled past Weber State 9-1 and 3-2 in the Big Sky Conference series opener Friday afternoon at Gloria Rodriguez Field.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead in the opener and never looked back.
Ella Gonzales put the Bears on board in the bottom of the first inning with a 2-run home run to center field. After a scoreless second inning, the Bears struck again in the third inning. Amailee Morales drilled a solo home run to right field and UNC opened a 3-0 lead.
The Wildcats scored a run in the top of the fourth inning, but the Bears promptly responded.
Quinn Myers – Lenz singled through the left side to score a run, and Gonzales singled up the middle push across two runs and the Bears led 6-1.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Bears put away the Wildcats in the sixth inning and invoked the mercy rule.
Gonzales started the Bears' part of the sixth inning with an RBI double to left field. Alison Steinker singled up the middle to score a run and Alyssa Wenzel ended the game with an RBI single that found its way between the shortstop and second base to end the game officially.
Gonzales, who batted in the cleanup spot, finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and scored two runs.
Erin Caviness tossed a complete game, scattered three hits, allowed one run, and fanned six batters to improve to 12-6 on the year.
In game two, the Bears rallied from a 2-0 deficit.
UNC found its offensive groove in the third inning. Sabrina Javorsky doubled down the left field line to score a run, and Steinker singled up the middle to score a run and knot it at 2-2.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Myers-Lenz added what turned out to be the game-winning RBI.
Isabelle DiNapoli earned the win in the circle and tossed six innings, allowing eight hits and two runs, and one walk and striking out one batter.
Caviness tossed the final inning to earn the save.
Lauren Strathearn and Nya Chacon each picked up a hit.
The Bears close out the series and look for the sweep Saturday at noon.
