Northern Colorado Tops Nebraska and Maine at the Big Red Spring Classic

LINCOLN, Neb. – Northern Colorado defeated Nebraska and Maine on the opening day of the Big Red Spring Classic from Bowlin Stadium. UNC defeated Nebraska 5-3 and topped Maine 8-0.
The Bears and Huskers met in the first game of the twin bill.
UNC made its move in the third inning. Amailee Morales' sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1, and Sabrina Javorsky singled up the middle to push across two runs and UNC led 3-1.
Alison Steinker added an RBI single in the fifth inning and Javorsky came up to bat again in the sixth and singled down the left-field line to score a run.
Isabelle DiNapoli earned the win in the circle. DiNapoli tossed five innings and scattered six hits, allowed three runs (two earned), and fanned four batters.
Erin Caviness entered in relief and threw two innings of scoreless softball to earn the save.
As a team, UNC produced 10 hits.
Javorsky batted 2-for-2 with three RBI and Morales finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jaycie Gandert finished 1-for-4 and scored a run, while Angelique Navarro batted 1-for-2 and scored a run.
Caviness started game two versus Maine and shut the Black Bears down.
The Thornton, Colorado native tossed a complete-game five-inning shutout scattered two hits, and fanned seven batters.
UNC, designated as the home team, went to work in the bottom of the first inning.
Morales delivered an RBI double, and Javorsky followed that up with a single up the middle to push across a run. Javorsky would later score on an error and the Bears led 3-0.
The offense continued for UNC in the second inning when Ella Gonzales singled up the middle to score a run, and Javorsky added another RBI.
Nya Chacon added to the UNC lead in the third inning with a solo home run to left field.
The Bears added two runs in the fifth inning and the game would be called due to the five-inning, eight-run mercy rule.
As a team, UNC generated 11 hits and drew five walks.
Chacon batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice and Javorsky finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Quinn Myers-Lenz went 2-for-2 and scored two runs.
The Bears return to action Thursday and match up with North Dakota and Nebraska.
