SAN MARCOS, Texas – Northern Colorado softball opened the highly competitive Texas State Tournament with a pair of setbacks.

Tulsa defeated UNC 11-5 in the opener and dropped a decision to tournament host Texas State, 8-0.

UNC opened the game versus Tulsa with a bang. Amailee Morales, facing a full count, homered to right center to put the Bears up 2-0 in the first inning.

After a scoreless second inning, Tulsa added three runs in the top of the third inning and one run in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead.

The Bears responded with a pair of runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Nya Chacon, facing a 3-2 count, singled to center field to score a run. Jayden Gandert then scored on a passed ball.

Tulsa scored three runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the top of the seventh to put the contest out of reach.

As a team, the Bears collected six hits (Alyssa Wenzel, Amailee Morales, Ella Gonzales, Sabrina Javorsky, Jayden Gandert, and Nya Chacon each recorded a hit.
Laura Strathearn, Amailee Morales, Ella Gonzales, Sabrina Javorsky, and Jaycie Gandert each drew a walk.
Katie Thomson recorded a stolen base, and Ella Gonzales added a double.
Erin Caviness started and absorbed the loss in the circle. The senior tossed 5.0 innings and allowed 8 hits, 7 runs (5 earned), and struck out 1 batter.

In game two the Bobcats defeated the Bears 8-0 in five innings.

Inside the box score

Ella Gonzales batted 1-for-2.
Araya Ogden threw 4.1 innings and allowed 9 hits, 8 runs, and 1 walk while fanning 3 batters.
