Northern Colorado Hung Tough Before Falling to No. 3 Stanford

GREELEY, Colo. – University of Northern Colorado went toe-to-toe with No. 3 Stanford before falling in three sets in front of a near sellout crowd at Bank of Colorado Arena Friday.
In the season opener for both sides, the Cardinal outlasted the Bears 25-22, 25-16, 32-30.
Trailing 2-0 at the intermission, Northern Colorado built a 9-4 advantage in the third set. Stanford evened the set at 14-14 with a run of its own. Neither side led by more than two the rest of the match, including two match points for the guest at 24-22.
A pair of miscues by the Cardinal forced extra points at 24-all. Neither side succeeded at closing out the other through 12-extra points. Northern Colorado failed to extend the match four times, while Stanford came up short three times, until a service error tied the score at 30-30. The Cardinal capitalized and closed out the contest with back-to-back kills.
In the opening set, the Bears doubled up the opposition in the first 15 rallies. Stanford responded with a 9-4 spurt of its own, pulling even at 14-14. Foreshadowing of things to come, neither side opened a lead of four points over the second half of the game. Trailing 24-21, Makenzie Harris slammed home a winner, drawing the Bears within two but Stanford returned the successful kill on the next point, earning the early advantage.
Grabbing the momentum from the comeback in game one, Stanford led wire-to-wire in game two. The Cardinal built the largest gap of the contest at 18-10 en route to the 25-16 victory and securing a 2-0 advantage at the break.
