Â
GREELEY, Colo. – University of Northern Colorado hosts a pair of top-10 ranked teams in the American Volleyball Coaches Preseason Poll to open the 2023 campaign.
Â
"We are excited to play teams like Stanford and Kentucky," Northern Colorado head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "It will be a good measuring stick for us. We want to see what our strengths are against elite competition."
Â
The Bears, which won the last two Big Sky Championships, face No. 3 Stanford and No. 10 Kentucky for the first time in program history. Northern Colorado and the Cardinal tangle at 6 p.m. Friday at Bank of Colorado Arena, followed by the Bears and Wildcats match at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Â
Stanford closed out the 2022 season with a 27-5 overall record, winning the Pac-12 with a 19-1 mark in league play. The Cardinal season ended in the regional final, falling 3-2 against San Diego.
Â
Kentucky won its sixth-consecutive Southeastern Conference title in 2022, before succumbing to the same fate as Stanford. The Wildcats fell to San Diego 3-0 in the regional semifinal.
Â
"We need to see what area we need to get better at over the next three months before potentially facing teams like them in the NCAA Tournament," Oates said. "Both teams are physical, fast and well-coached."Â
Â
Northern Colorado returns 14 players from last season's championship team, including the first AVCA DI All-American Selection in school history, Syd Cole.
Â
"For us, we have everything to gain and nothing to lose, so we will be aggressive and go after it," Oates said. "I know our team will be ready to compete."
