9 UNC Bears Compete at World Team Trials

GENEVA, Ohio – Northern Colorado wrestling shined at the national stage with nine competing at the USA Wrestling U23 Nationals and U20 World Team Trials at the Spire Institute.
"Our guys continue to shine in the international styles of wrestling. I think this is a testament to the type of athletes we are bringing to Greeley," said UNC head wrestling coach Troy Nickerson. "Not only are these kids trying to become All-Americans and National Champions, but they are also trying to become World Champions as well. No matter what the style, wrestling is wrestling, and it all will translate once we hit the college season again in November."
At U20 Greco World Team Trials, it was a pair of Bears meeting in the 77kg finals. Derek Matthews defeated Aydin Rix-McElhinney.
Six wrestlers competed at the U23 Freestyle Team Trials.
Stevo Poulin placed second at 57kg, while Dominick Serrano finished sixth at 61kg and Rudy Lopez finished sixth at 70kg. Benji Alanis (65kg), Vinny Zerban (74kg), and Rix-McElhinney (79kg) also competed.
In the U23 Greco World Team Trials, Dyson Kunz placed fifth at 60kg.
Matthews will represent the United States at the U20 World Championships in Warsaw, Poland in August.
