GREELEY, Colo. – After winning the first game of the doubleheader, 6-3, the Northern Colorado softball team rallied to win the nightcap, 6-5, against Portland State in walk-off fashion on Friday evening.
After facing a 5-0 deficit in the fourth inning, the Bears strung together six unanswered runs to complete the doubleheader victory against the Vikings.
With the five-run hole in the bottom of the fourth, UNC started to chip away at Portland State's lead. Peyton Gale hit an RBI single to score Emma Osborne for the Bears first run of the game. Sabrina Javorsky followed up with a single to right field to score Abby Gaona to make it 5-2.
In the sixth, Alexsi Barashkoff hit a lead-off home run to cut UNC's deficit to two. The solo shot over the right-field wall was the juniors fifth homer of the season.
Then in the bottom of the seventh, the Bears put together three runs on three hits and one error to claim the walk-off victory. With Paola Villegas and Alyssa Wenzel on base, Amailee Morales hit a triple down the right-field line to even the game up at 5-5.
The Vikings then walked the next two batters to load the bases, but to create a force out at home and to vie for a double play. However, Carson Fischer hit a bomb to right field that the Portland State outfielder dropped, allowing the Bears to win the game on an E9.
In the first game of the day, Portland State also jumped out to an early lead, holding a 3-0 leading in the fourth. UNC was able to string together six-unanswered runs for an easy 6-3 victory. Morales also had a triple down the right-field line in the opening game, as the freshman had two hits on the day, both triples.
Erin Caviness pitched the complete game in the opener, adding eight strikeouts to her Big Sky leading total.
Isabelle DiNapoli started in the circle for the Bears in the nightcap, pitching four innings with one strikeout. Grace Algrim came in to pitch starting in the fifth inning, and the freshman conceded just one hit in three innings of work, earning her first collegiate win.
