SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- For the third time in program history, the Northern Colorado men's golf team claimed the Big Sky Conference Men's Golf Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Talking Stick Golf Club.

The title marks the first since securing them back-to-back in 2018 and 2019, and this is the first title under head coach Clayton Sikorski.

Lakewood, Colo., native and Big Sky Player of the Year, Jack Castiglia paced the Bears on the final day, turning in a season-low 66 to help the Bears secure the championship. Castiglia's strong finish helped him place second overall at the tournament, finishing with a three-round score of 208 (-2).

Freshman Yuze Zhang turned in a second-straight par for the Bears, as he finished the tournament with a 211 (+1) and in sole possession of third place overall.

Mead, Colo., native TJ Shehee hit a 72 in the final round and finished tied for fourth overall with a 213 (+3).

For their efforts, Castiglia, Zhang and Shehee were named to the Big Sky 2023 Men's Golf All-Tournament Team.

Freshman and Arvada, Colo., native Gage Messingham shot a 72 to round-out UNC's scoring I the third round. Messingham finished with a three-round score of 218 (+8) and tied for 13th overall.

Fellow freshman, Alessio Battista shot a 73 in the final round, finishing in 15th place overall with a 219 (+9).

All five UNC golfers placed in the top 15 of the 30 golfers at the tournament.

With the Big Sky championship, the Bears earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. The fields for the regionals will be announced on Wednesday, May 3, on the Golf Channel.
