SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Senior TJ Shehee turned in a three-under par to pace the Bears on the opening day of competition at the 2023 Big Sky Championships at Talking Stick Golf Course in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Bears sit in second place after the first round, just one stroke behind leader Sacramento State.

Shehee recorded five birdies on the day, including three on the first three holes. His score of 67 in the first round seems him sitting in second place overall, three strokes behind Sac State's Casey Leebrick.

2023 Player of the Year, Jack Castiglia, sits tied for third overall after turning in a 70 in the first round. Castiglia shot four birdies on the day, including three on the back nine to get back to even.

Freshman Yuze Zhang handed in a strong performance, shooting a one-over as the third leading scorer for the Bears. Zhang hit four birdies as well and his 71 has him sitting tied for sixth overall.

Gage Messingham shot a 76 for the Bear's fourth scorer. After a slow start, Messingham recorded his first birdie of the tournament on hole 10, and recorded a one-over on the back nine.

Fellow freshman Alessio Battista rounded out the scoring for the Bears, shooting a 77 in the round, which included a two-over on the front nine.

The Bears return to the links for the second round of action tomorrow morning. Alessio Battista will lead things off for the Bears, teeing off at 8 a.m. (MT) with the first group of golfers.
