OGDEN, Utah – The Northern Colorado softball team split the opening doubleheader at Weber State on Saturday afternoon. The Bears won the first game 8-3, before dropping the nightcap, 2-0.
Erin Caviness earned her 11th win of the season, keeping the Wildcats to just three runs on eight hits in the first game. Caviness added four strikeouts to her Big Sky leading total.
The Bears got on the board behind an Amailee Morales single in the first inning, but the Wildcats used a sac fly and a home run in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
However, UNC responded in the top of the second with four runs off three hits. Lauren Strathearn hit a bases-loaded single to start the scoring streak. Jayden Gandert followed up with a two-RBI single to give the Bears back the lead. Alyssa Wenzel then recorded an RBI on a grounder to second which gave the Bears the go-ahead run.
Weber State added one final run in the bottom of the third, but UNC added three more on for insurance in the sixth. Morales recorded her second hit of the game to score Gandert. Alison Steinker then doubled to center to score two final runs.
In the nightcap, solo runs by the Wildcats in the first and second were the only runs that would cross home during the contest.
