GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado softball team won the three-game series against Montana, with a decisive 7-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Despite a late rally falling short in the first game, and the Bears losing 9-8, UNC won the first and third games of the weekend over the Grizzlies for the series win.

The Bears improve to 16-19 on the season with a 4-5 mark in Big Sky competition, while the Grizzlies drop to 8-31 with a Big Sky record of 2-7.

Peyton Gale and Sabrina Javorsky both had two hits each for the Bears in the 7-1 win. Amailee Morales scored two runs in the contest, while Carson Fischer recorded two RBI.

The Bears used three hits in the first inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. UNC then tacked on two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth for a 7-0 lead. The Grizz got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, using an error to score their lone run.

In the opening game of the day, Montana held a 9-1 lead after three and a half innings, but the Bears didn't concede and came roaring back.

Baylie Kakallis scored on a wild pitch to get the Bears on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Northern Colorado then scored three runs in the sixth, starting with a two-run homer by Alison Steinker. In the bottom of the seventh, UNC scored three more runs to bring the game within one, and had the walk-off run on third, but the Grizz were able to escape with the win on a foul out to end the Bears' rally.

In the circle, Erin Caviness pitched the complete game in the nightcap, conceding no earned runs on three hits while recording four strikeouts. The trio of Isabelle DiNapoli, Lainey Hanehan and Grace Algrim all saw time in the circle during the opening game. Algrim pitched the final 2.1 innings giving up only one hit and one base on balls, while striking out two Montana batters.

UNC hits the road for the final time of the regular season, taking on Weber State next weekend, April 21-22, for a three-game series in Ogden, Utah. The doubleheader on April 21 is set to begin at 2 p.m. (MT) with the third game starting at noon on April 22.
