GREELEY, Colo. – A big fifth inning, capped off by a two RBI single from Alyssa Wenzel secured a walk-off victory for the Northern Colorado softball team, as the Bears defeated Montana, 10-2, on Friday afternoon.
The Bears were efficient against the Grizzlies, stringing together 10 runs on nine hits through the shortened contest. Four UNC batters recorded multiple hits on the day; Abby Gaona stepping in after Lauren Strathearn came out with an injury, went a perfect 2-for-2 at the bat, scoring two runs as well. Carson Fischer, Sabrina Javorsky, and Wenzel all recorded two hits on the day as well.
Montana got on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second, but the Griz wouldn't stay in charge for long.
In the bottom of the same frame, with Ella Gonzales and Baylee Kakallis on base, Sabrina Javorsky hit her second homerun of the season to put UNC on top, 3-2.
The Bears then added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead. With the bases loaded, Jayden Gandert earned a base on balls to score Paola Villegas. Wenzel followed up with her first hit of the game, scoring Gaona and Payten Gale. A wild pitch then allowed Gandert to finish the trek around the bases for the seventh UNC run of the game.
With rain looming on the horizon, the Bears put an end to the contest in the bottom of the fifth for an early win. Jayden Gandert singled to score her sister Jaycie Gandert, before Wenzel hit her two-run single to end the game with UNC on top 10-2.
In the circle, Erin Caviness picked up her ninth win of the season, pitching the five-inning complete game. Caviness conceded just three hits and earned two strikeouts.
