Northern Colorado Splits Games with UTEP and NMSU

Starting off against the Miners, the Bears took an early 2-0 lead thanks to a two-run homer from Alexsi Barashkoff in the first inning. The Bears then added three runs on three hits in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead, before UTEP eventually got on the board in the bottom of the second.
UTEP ended up tying the game in the bottom of the fifth at 6-6. As the game went into extras, Carson Fischer singled through the right side to score Sabrina Javorsky and Jayden Mercado for the 8-6 lead in the top of the eighth. UTEP scored one run in the bottom of the frame, but Erin Caviness, pitching in relief, held on to close out the Miners for her sixth win of the season.
In the game against New Mexico State, Barashkoff again got things started for this Bears hitting a three-run homer for a 3-0 lead in the first. NMSU responded with a solo home run in the second, but Paola Villegas hit a double to score Alyssa Wenzel in the third inning for a 4-1 lead. Unfortunately, the Aggies would go on to score five unanswered runs, including a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to hand the Bears their only loss of the weekend.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Alexsi Barashkoff went 4-for-5 (.800) with two home runs on the day, recording 6 RBI and 10 total bases.
- Alysa Wenzel and Amailee Morales both batted .500 on the day, with Morales hitting two doubles and Wenzel scoring three runs.
- Erin Caviness pitched a total of eight innings, 3.0 in the win against UTEP and the first five against NMSU, earning a 2.62 ERA with just three earned runs conceded.
- Overall for the weekend, Amailee Morales led the Bears with a .444 average, with four hits in nine at-bats, including three doubles.
- Barashkoff was second on the Bears for the weekend, going 5-for-12 (.417) with three home runs, three runs scored and 14 RBI.
UP NEXT
Northern Colorado is scheduled to host UMKC this upcoming weekend for a three-game series. The home opener on Friday is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. (MT), while first pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Gloria Rodriguez Field.
